On a canvas stretching from Southern California to Northern Italy, my Adaptation series portrays a manifestation of parallel destinies merged together on a journey of self-discovery and awareness.  For over half a decade, I have been living abroad in Italy without the familiar avenues of American culture and opportunity.   As a foreign woman in a dominantly male society, it became essential to fuse my identities of two diverse cultures.  Labeled a “straniera” (foreigner), and often singled out, I developed a profound sensibility of the differences others perceived of me.  Through detachment, isolation, and exploration, my individuality steadily unmasks and illuminates itself through my art.  Limited by language, painting, as reflected in my work, has become my dominant form of communication.

The Adaptation collection is a series of surrealistic impressions depicting the relationship between a woman and the world she lives in.  Characters represent Goddess, Warrior, and Monster; they are alien and human; imperfect yet ideal; archetypes full of purpose and empowerment.  Blending both urban artist subculture with new anthropological Italian trends and flavors became a recipe for this transformative series of paintings.

Each composition presents a staged scene and open curtain to each character’s journey: adaptation, reflection, and subsequent evolution.  Forms suggest the playful nature of life as theater, influenced by my foundation in fine arts and production design. The juxtaposition of landscape, materialism, sexuality, and the metaphysical innuendos within each piece, defines the Adaptation series.
